I lost someone a few years back. One of the saddest moments in my life. He was an incredible person. Kind, patient and a great father figure. Losing him was hard and had a great impact on me and my family.
Months prior to his death, we saw his health deteriorate so fast. From having a mild stroke to dementia to Alzheimers to being bedridden in just less than 2 years. It was heartbreaking to see someone you care about go through such an ordeal.
I asked myself during this period was if I were to die tomorrow, did I do enough for myself, my family and those around me?
What did I do for myself that when I look back today, I can be so proud of? Have I reached the goals that I have set for myself? If I have not, have I done enough to achieve them?
Have I spent enough time with my family and friends? Did I set aside time for special moments and occasion? Did I tell or show my love to my family as much as I should?
Have I done anything to help the community? What did I do that benefit the society in a positive way?
Life can change in a second. Have I forgiven those who hurt me? Have I ask for forgiveness from those who I hurt?
When I looked back during that moment when we were having his funeral, I was very touched by the amount of people that came just for him. He was been a wonderful pillar of support for the people around him. His family, friends and neighbours came in droves specially for him.
It was something that I do admire and envy. The way he was remembered. And I want that for myself and the people I love.
From that moment onwards, I work to make sure that I did something out of myself, spend time with family and contribute to society. It took the death of someone I love to put me back in gear before I became far too lost.
I miss you, bapak. Fahmi and I will make you proud. Insha Allah.
